Bayern thrash Dortmund in title clash

German champions Bayern Munich thrashed title rivals Borussia Dortmund to move back to the top of the Bundesliga with six games remaining.

Dortmund, who were two points clear heading into this match, were shell-shocked following a ruthless first-half display from the hosts.

Goals from Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels, Serge Gnabry and Javi Martinez gave Bayern a 4-0 lead at half-time.

Bayern are chasing a seventh consecutive Bundesliga title.

In a showdown described as the "biggest in Europe this season", Dortmund's title hopes suffered a blow and extended their losing streak at the Allianz Arena to five games.

At the start of December, the title race looked to be over with Dortmund nine points clear at the top, but Bayern took advantage of the stuttering form of their rivals to claw back the deficit.

And as if intended as a timely reminder of Bayern's pedigree, Lewandowski became the second-fastest player to score 200 goals in the German top flight, doing so in 284 games.

His Bayern side are aiming to win a 29th league title and could add the German Cup after reaching the semi-finals with a victory over second-division side Heidenheim.

Rooney sent off for first time in MLS

Wayne Rooney was sent off for the first time in his Major League Soccer career during his DC United side's defeat against Los Angeles FC.

Rooney was dismissed for a wild lunge with both feet off the ground which caught LA striker Diego Rossi just below the knee with his studs.

The former Manchester United and England captain was initially shown a yellow card but after a VAR check, the referee changed his decision to red.
DC United were losing 3-0 at the time.

Rossi had scored LA's second and third goals, with former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela opening the scoring, and he completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute after Rooney had been sent off.

It is the seventh red card of Rooney's career for club and country and his first since September 2014.

16-year-old Zhoya smashes hurdles record

Sixteen-year-old Sasha Zhoya says he wants to "show the world what he can do" after winning three golds and breaking two junior world records in a matter of days at the Australian Athletics Championships.

Zhoya cleared 5.56m - higher than any other 16-year-old - in the under-20 pole vault to win his first medal.

He dominated the under-18 100m hurdles, winning in 13.05 seconds to set a new world record for a 16-year-old, and narrowly missed out on breaking a national record in the under-20 200m.

His winning time of 21.18 seconds - impeded by strong winds - was just 0.3 seconds short of the national record.

Zhoya's pole vault performance was a world under-18 best and was close to the qualifying standard for the World Championships.
"Not everyone can be Usain Bolt but I'm going to work my butt off to be Usain Bolt as Sasha Zhoya," he previously told the West Australian.
"We've had a couple of big names in Australia and I want to be the biggest. I want to show the world what I can do."
Zhoya is based in Perth - the city of his birth - but he is also eligible to represent France through his mother, who is a former French skier.

Azarenka beats Kerber to reach first singles final for three years

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka reached her first singles final in three years by defeating top seed Angelique Kerber at the Monterrey Open.

The Belarusian beat Kerber - another former world number one - 6-4 4-6 6-1.

She now faces Spain's Garbine Muguruza in Sunday's final in Mexico.
"I haven't won many of those in the last couple years so it's good that I'm able to turn it around and pick up my level," Azarenka said.
The 29-year-old last contested a singles final in April 2016, winning both Indian Wells and Miami within two weeks before announcing her pregnancy later that year and giving birth to son Leo in December.

She returned to the sport competitively the following summer but has been involved in a custody battle with the child's father which has impacted on her tennis.
"I'm getting back used to playing, and I'm trying to make better decisions, better choices under pressure," Azarenka said after her win against the German.
"It's all about taking one step at a time. To put it all together is always more tricky, so I'm glad that I'm able to put little pieces together in the important moments.
