Being "on bed" has a totally different meaning from being "in bed".
Did you know that?
"on bed": When you are on bed, you are on top of it; perhaps sitting, talking, working, relaxing, etc.
"in bed": This implies all of these:
1. sleeping
2. under the covers (e.g. bedclothes, blanket or duvet) and are about to go to sleep.
3. asleep
To be "in bed" also means to be sick.
Example:
She has been in bed since last week, having been diagnosed of typhoid.
NB:
Note that once you wake up in the morning, you can no longer say "in bed", even when you haven't left it. You are then "on bed".
