South Africa stun Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt

South Africa knocked hosts Egypt out of the Africa Cup of Nations and booked their place in the quarter-finals with a late winner in Cairo.

With Egypt throwing players forward, Thembinkosi Lorch struck on the counter-attack after 85 minutes.
Mahmoud Trezeguet had the hosts' best chance, but he fired at the goalkeeper.

Egypt have followed holders Cameroon out of the tournament, while South Africa will return to Cairo to play Nigeria in the last eight on Wednesday.

Before the game, Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter spoke about causing an Egyptian "national disaster", and his team played with an intensity to match their game plan from the first whistle.

The visitors frustrated Egypt by remaining in their shape while showing attacking intent at the other end as the impressive Percy Lau pulled the strings.

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah - who shook off a cold to make the Egyptian starting XI - had a disappointing evening after firing a half-volley wide in the early stages.

Egypt ran out of ideas in front of an anxious home crowd at the Cairo International Stadium, as Lorch ran onto Lebo Mothiba's square pass to calmly slot the ball past Mohamed El-Shenawy to knock out the host.

Messi sent off for first time in 14 years as Argentina beat Chile

Lionel Messi was shown only the second red card of his career as Argentina beat Chile 2-1 in a hot-tempered Copa America third-place play-off.

The Barcelona forward had provided the assist for Sergio Aguero's opener before Paulo Dybala made it 2-0.

But Messi was shown a red following a clash with Gary Medel, which also saw the Chile player dismissed.

Arturo Vidal scored a second-half penalty but Argentina held off the fightback to secure third place.

However, the big talking point was undoubtedly the sendings off of Medel and Messi - who has never been sent off for Barcelona, and whose only other red card was on his international debut 14 years ago.

Tension had been building as the game wore on in a physical encounter with both sides often giving away niggly free-kicks.

Tempers spilled over eight minutes before half time when Messi appeared to nudge over Medel as they both challenged for the ball.

Medel responded by forcibly pushing his face into Messi's as the two players argued before the referee arrived and dismissed them both.

It seemed harsh on Messi, who in the replays of the incident did not appear to respond aggressively to Medel's action.

Murray & Williams win in blockbuster mixed doubles debut

Andy Murray and Serena Williams began their blockbuster partnership with a confident win in the Wimbledon mixed doubles on a buzzing Centre Court.

Britain's Murray and American Williams eased to a 6-4 6-1 win over unseeded Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi.

The high-profile pair had too much quality for their battling opponents and will meet 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo in the second round.
Earlier, Murray lost alongside Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the men's doubles.

But several hours later, there were contrasting emotions for the Scot - a the three-time Grand Slam singles champion - as he and 23-time major winner Williams breezed past their German-Chilean opponents in one hour and 16 minutes.
"After losing earlier in the men's doubles, all the energy is the focused now on the mix," Murray, 32, said. "We played well, returned well and served well - it is a great start."
Williams, 37, added: "I think it worked out well, We had never played together, so it is always a learning curve. We wanted to start fast and we take it very seriously."

The tantalising partnership between two of the sport's most recognisable stars has been one of the main talking points at Wimbledon since it was first mooted last week and then finally confirmed on Tuesday.

F1 confirms start date for 2020 season

The 2020 Formula 1 season will start on 15 March with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The 25th race in Melbourne, which first hosted the sport in 1996, will mark the start of F1's 70th anniversary year.

F1 chairman Chase Carey said: "The Albert Park circuit is one of the most popular on the calendar. There is no better place to start the 2020 season."
The date, the same weekend as the start of last season, was announced without any further details of the calendar.

F1 has already said there will be two new races on the schedule next year, with the return of the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort and a new race in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.

But four races are in doubt, with Britain, Germany, Mexico and Spain all out of contract at the end of this season.

At least two of those races are expected to lose their places on the calendar, keeping the total number of races next year at 21.

Spain and Germany are considered most vulnerable, and the Mexican government has expressed reservations about continuing with the race, but there are also doubts about the British event.
