Argentina's Messi handed three-month international ban

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been banned from international football for three months after
claiming the Copa America was "corrupt".

Barcelona forward Messi, 32, was sent off in Argentina's 2-1 third-place play-off win over Chile and later said the "cup was fixed for Brazil".

He has also been fined $50,000 (£41,121) by Conmebol, the South American Football Confederation.

Messi has seven days to appeal Conmebol's decision to suspend him.

The ban means Messi will miss Argentina's upcoming friendlies against Chile, Mexico and Germany in September and October.

Argentina's qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup begins in March 2020.

Following Argentina's 2-0 semi-final defeat by hosts Brazil, the Argentine Football Association complained about "serious and gross refereeing errors".

In response, Conmebol said accusations questioning the integrity of the Copa America were "unfounded" and "represent a lack of respect".

Messi was shown a red card in the 37th minute against Chile, following a clash with Gary Medel, who was also dismissed.
"We don't have to be part of this corruption," Messi said. "They have showed us a lack of respect throughout this tournament.
"Sadly, the corruption, the referees, they don't allow people to enjoy football, they ruined it a bit."

Schumacher takes first victory in F2

Mick Schumacher took his maiden Formula 2 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The 20-year-old's win came at a track where his father Michael won four of his all-time record 91 grands prix.

Schumacher started from pole position, earned by finishing eighth in Saturday's 'feature' race, and fended off Japan's Nobuharu Matsushita for the 28 laps.
"Amazing race. The car was great," Schumacher said.
"Credit to Nobu, who kept me entertained. It wasn't easy.
"I am just so happy. (It was) quite hard. Obviously the tyres were degrading and not easy to keep them alive, always having pressure and checking mirrors. It was entertaining."
Schumacher is a member of the Ferrari driver academy and is widely tipped for a move up to F1 in the future.

It remains to be seen whether this happens as early as next year, however.

Schumacher, who tested a Ferrari F1 car in Bahrain in April, drives for the leading Prema team and has had an up-and-down first season in F2, the final feeder category before F1.

His previous best result was a fourth place in Austria. He lies 11th in the championship and he and his mentors may feel he would benefit from a second season in F2 before being subjected to the pressure that will inevitably fall on the son of such a famous father should he graduate to motorsport's top category.
Schumacher said: "Only time can tell. Having the first victory in F2 is a great thing. I need to work a lot on myself. Whether I go to F1 next year or in two years or maybe three, I don't know.

Semenya to miss World Championships after court ruling

Caster Semenya says she will not defend her World Championship 800m title in September after a setback in her challenge to the restricting of testosterone levels in female runners.

But the South African said she would "continue her fight for human rights" despite her "disappointment".

Semenya has twice appealed against IAAF rules preventing her from running without medication.
But a ruling allowing her to compete has now been overturned.

Semenya is challenging new rules from the sport's world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations, that she and other athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) must either take testosterone-reducing medication in order to compete in track events from 400m to the mile or change to another distance.

Semenya had been able to race while awaiting the decision of a Swiss court, having previously lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) in May.

The latest ruling by the Swiss Federal Supreme Court means she will not be allowed to compete at the World Championships in Doha.

The court has not yet reached a final decision on the appeal itself.

"I am very disappointed to be kept from defending my hard-earned title," Semenya, 28, said.

"But this will not deter me from continuing my fight for the human rights of all of the female athletes concerned."

The IAAF said the court's decision "creates much needed parity and clarity for all athletes as they prepare for the World Championships".
