Champions City thrash West Ham in VAR-dominated game

Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City got their title defence off with a 5-0 victory at West Ham in a game that saw the video assistant referee play a significant role for the first time in the Premier League.

The technology is making its debut in England's top flight this season and, after last night's curtain raiser between Liverpool and Norwich passed off without incident, it took centre-stage on Saturday.

VAR was first called on when Gabriel Jesus appeared to have put City 3-0 up midway through the second half, only for Raheem Sterling to be ruled fractionally offside in the build-up.

After Sterling added City's third, a moment also reviewed for possible offside, the system then awarded the visitors a penalty retake after Sergio Aguero's tame effort was saved by Lukasz Fabianski but Declan Rice was deemed to have encroached into the area.

The striker made no mistake at the second attempt.
Guardiola praises 'special' Sterling.

This was, nevertheless, a dominant and deserved victory for Pep Guardiola's side, who laid down a marker for the season ahead in emphatic fashion.

Neymar exit speculation from PSG mounts

Forward Neymar will not play for Paris St-Germain in their opening Ligue 1 fixture against Nimes, with the French champions suggesting the Brazilian could be set to leave the club.

Leonardo, PSG's sporting director, said that talks about the the 27-year-old's exit were "more advanced than before".

But the club were not ready to give their approval to a transfer, he said.

The world most expensive player has been linked with a return to Barcelona and a move to arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Neymar joined PSG in 2017 when the club, owned by the wealthy Qatar Sports Investments, paid 222m (£200m) to Neymar so that he could buy himself out of his contract.

The striker has scored 34 league goals in two seasons for the French giants, although injuries interrupted both of those campaigns.

PSG's coach Thomas Tuchel said Neymar took part in training on Saturday, but was not fully fit.

Joshua-Ruiz Jr rematch will be in Saudi Arabia

Britain's Anthony Joshua will face unified world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr in their rematch in Saudi Arabia on 7 December.

The pair fought in New York in June, with Ruiz earning a shock seventh-round stoppage victory to hand Joshua his first professional loss.

Ruiz, who was knocked down in the third round before recovering, picked up the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO world titles.

Cardiff's Principality Stadium had been among the options to host the rematch.

Joshua, 29, had said his preference was to fight in the Welsh capital, where he has previously fought in front of crowds of more than 70,000 people for his wins over Carlos Takam and Joseph Parker.

However, 29-year-old Ruiz, who was born in the United States but has Mexican heritage, had ruled out a fight taking place in the United Kingdom.

Human rights campaigners have however questioned the choice of venue, citing Saudi Arabia's "abysmal" human rights record.

Saudi Arabia hosted British boxer Amir Khan's recent win over Billy Dib and Callum Smith's success over George Groves in the World Boxing Super Series final in September.

Mexico to stay on F1 calendar until 2022

Mexico will remain on the Formula 1 calendar for three more years after a deal was agreed to expand the schedule to a record 22 races next season.
The race will change its name to the Mexico City Grand Prix from 2020.

Mexico returned to the schedule in 2015 after 23 years but faced an uncertain future, with the government suggesting funds might be allocated elsewhere.

New races will take place in Vietnam and the Netherlands from 2020, with Germany set to drop off the calendar.

Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said the three-year agreement was based on a new financing model without the use of public resources.
"The Mexico City government will be an intermediary, creating a trust that will raise the private investment required to deliver this international event," she said.
This year's Mexican Grand Prix takes place at the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in Mexico City in October.
