El Clasico postponed over unrest fears

This month's El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid has been postponed because of fears of civil unrest.

The match was scheduled for 26 October but there have been days of protest in Barcelona after nine Catalan separatist leaders were jailed on Monday.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid disagreed withcalls to switch the game to Madrid. The clubs have proposed Wednesday, 18 December as a new date.

Manager Ernesto Valverde had said Barcelona were against switching the game to Madrid as they visit Slavia Prague in the Champions League on 23 October, three days before El Clasico had been scheduled.

And on Friday the club issued a statement saying their "desire" was to play the match as originally scheduled because they had the "utmost confidence" in the fans who they say "always express themselves in exemplary fashion" at the ground.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane was asked about the postponement in a news conference on Friday and said "we will be ready to play on the date told by the right person".
"We will adapt to what we are asked," he added La Liga made the postponement request because of "exceptional circumstances beyond our control" as more protests are expected in Barcelona on the day of the match.
Protests have continued into a fifth day in Spain's Catalonia region with protesters clashing with riot police.

Hundreds of thousands of people waving pro-independence flags and chanting "freedom for political prisoners" took part in marches across Catalonia on Friday.

Ronaldo scores and Buffon makes superb late save as Juventus win

Cristiano Ronaldo helped Juventus extend their lead at the top of Serie A as they saw off the challenge of Bologna in Turin.

But they needed their recalled 41-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to make a superb late save from Federico Santander's overhead kick to ensure the win.

Ronaldo was presented with a shirt before kick-off to mark his 700th career goal last week and he duly notched his 701st in stylish fashion, producing a quick stepover to find half a yard and then a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

Bologna hit back seven minutes later as centre-back Danilo picked out the top corner with a sumptuous half-volley from the edge of the area.

Sinisa Mihajlovic's side seemed unruffled by Juventus for the rest of the half and contained the home side's celebrated forward line with some ease.

Veteran Argentine striker Rodrigo Palacio threatened in behind Leonardo Bonucci on a number of occasions but could not find a way to test Buffon.

And, after Lukasz Skorupski had saved well from a Ronaldo header, a defensive mix-up presented Miralem Pjanic with the opportunity to stroke Juventus back in front and the home team took control.

Skorupski pulled off two stunning saves to deny Gonzalo Higuain a deserved goal before keeping out Ronaldo's fierce left-footed strike in the final 10 minutes.

Day dies in hospital four days after suffering brain injury in a fight

Boxer Patrick Day has died aged 27 - four days after suffering a brain injury in a fight against Charles Conwell.

The American was put into a coma on Saturday after he was knocked out in the 10th round of his super welterweight bout in Chicago.

Promoter Lou DiBella confirmed Day had died on Wednesday "surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team".
"He was a son, brother, and good friend to many," said a statement.
"Pat's kindness, positivity, and generosity of spirit made a lasting impression with everyone he met."
Day was taken from the ring on a stretcher after the conclusion of the fight on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk's heavyweight victory over Chazz Witherspoon in the US.
"Patrick Day didn't need to box," the statement from DiBella Entertainment continued.
"He came from a good family, he was smart, educated, had good values and had other avenues available to him to earn a living.
Fellow American Conwell, 21, wrote an emotional letter to Day following the fight.
"I never meant this to happen to you, all I wanted to do was win," he said.
"If I could take it all back, I would. No-one deserves this to happen to them."
Day won 17 of his 22 fights, with four defeats and one draw.

Olympic marathon to be moved north to avoid Tokyo heat

The marathon and race walking at next summer's Tokyo Olympics are set to be moved to Sapporo - 800km to the north - because of its cooler conditions.

Measures to combat the heat in the Japanese capital, including better shade and water sprays, have been trialled at test events this summer.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said athlete welfare was "at the heart" of changes.

Sapporo can be as much as six degrees cooler than Tokyo in peak summer.

The plans will be discussed by the IOC at the end of the month as part of a special session on "heat countermeasures".

International Association of Athletics Federations president Lord Coe said: "Giving athletes the best platform for their performances within the environment they are in is central to all major events, and we will work with the organisers to create the very best marathon and race walk courses for next year's Olympic Games."
