Premier League to return to longer summer transfer window

Premier League clubs have voted to change the summer transfer window to bring it in line with the rest of Europe.

For the past two seasons, the window in England has closed the day before the top-flight campaign began.

In a statement, the Premier League said the deadline has been changed to the "traditional point at the end of August/early September".

The 2020 closing date will be 1 September at 17:00 BST.

The vote was taken at a Premier League shareholders' meeting in London on Thursday.

The transfer window was moved to the start of August in England following complaints from clubs and managers that keeping it open after the start of the season was disruptive.

It was hoped major leagues across Europe would also bring their own windows forward.

However, that did not happen and a number of clubs found themselves in the uncomfortable position of knowing their players were in demand across the continent but unable to bring in replacements for anyone they wanted to sell.

Ronaldo extends scoring streak as Verona shocked Juve

Giampaolo Pazzini scored a late penalty to hand Hellas Verona a shock victory over Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo netted in his 10th successive league game - one short of a Serie A record - to open the scoring for the league leaders before Fabio Borini equalised for the hosts.

But Pazzini converted an 86th-minute spot-kick after the video assistant referee said Marash Kumbulla's header hit Leonardo Bonucci's arm.

Meanwhile, Juve remain top with 54 points but Inter Milan could replace them at the summit of Serie A if they beat AC Milan on Sunday.

The hosts, who won promotion to the Italian top flight via the play-offs last season, impressed in the first half and could have easily gone ahead when Davide Faraoni's powerful drive was tipped over by Wojciech Szczesny.

Kumbulla thought he had given his side an unlikely lead on 23 minutes when his header from Miguel Veloso's deep free-kick beat Szczesny only to be ruled out by VAR.

But the champions did have chances of their own - Ronaldo struck the post after driving infield while Douglas Costa drew a super save from ex-Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri.

And it was away side who broke the deadlock as Ronaldo latched on to Rodrigo Bentancur's through ball, shrugged off the attentions of Amir Rrahmani, and fired home to become the first Juve player to score in 10 consecutive Serie A games.

Ronaldo, who turned 35 on Wednesday, has now scored 20 goals from 20 league games this season, with 15 of those strikes coming in his last 10 outings.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce targets 2020 Olympics success

Four-time 100m world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce says she believes she can keep the younger generation at bay to win Olympic gold in Tokyo.

The 33-year-old became the oldest women to win a world or Olympic 100m title with victory in Doha in September.

She only came back to competition early last year after spending two years away from the sport to have her son Zyon.
"I definitely believe it's possible, considering the year I had and the room to improve," the Jamaican said.
"There are things that I do personally that I missed out on and have gone light on.
"That time out actually gave me the time to just mentally refocus on the goals that I want to achieve and I'm going to soldier on and I'm definitely looking forward to making it to my fourth Olympic Games."
Fraser-Pryce won 100m gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, before taking bronze behind compatriot Elaine Thompson and American Tori Bowie at Rio 2016.

She also confirmed that she intends to double up by competing in the 200m, the event in which 24-year-old Briton Dina Asher-Smith won gold in Doha.

"The plan last year was to do the double, and my coach decided he didn't want me doing the double, considering I just came back off a break," added Fraser-Pryce, who is a nominee for the World Sportswoman of the Year at the Laureus Awards in Berlin on 17 February.
"So, this year we are attempting to do the 100 and the 200, and my programme has been geared towards that."
Fraser-Pryce began training ten weeks after Zyon's birth in 2017, but had to run with a special band stabilising her stomach following a caesarean section.

Verstappen says he can beat Lewis Hamilton with the right car

Red Bull's Max Verstappen says he can beat Lewis Hamilton to this year's world championship as long as his car is good enough.

The Dutchman, 22, thinks his team can "mount a challenge to Mercedes".
"Lewis is very good. He is definitely one of the best out there but he is not God. Maybe God is with him, but he is not God," Verstappen said.
Asked if he could beat Hamilton, he said: "Yes. It is very car-dependent, of course."

Verstappen said he believed Hamilton and Mercedes were vulnerable if Red Bull could put them under more pressure.
"When you can put the pressure on, of course it is a lot harder for the guy in the lead," Verstappen said.
"If you never really have pressure, you can drive at 97-98% and you never make mistakes, or maybe one weekend out of 21-22
"Even if we start within 0.2secs, you can really mount the pressure and I would like to start straight away there because then it is really on.
"I know that when everything is put together, as a team, under pressure situations like in Brazil for example - but also other difficult situations like in Germany [where Verstappen won in the wet and Hamilton and Mercedes made a series of errors] - you can see that the team is really excelling compared to the others.”
Verstappen heads into 2020 with his future secure having agreed in December a new contract with Red Bull until 2023.
