Manchester United set to sign Cavani

Former Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is due to fly into England on Sunday to join Manchester United.

The Uruguay international, 33, has been in talks with United and, although there is no deal yet, it is growing increasingly likely Cavani will join on what could be a two-year contract.

Cavani is out of contract having left Paris St-Germain at the end of June.
He left PSG under a cloud following a disagreement with Neymar and feels he has more to give to European football.

United have been given a positive impression about the player's desire to play for the club and should face-to-face talks confirm that impression, a deal will be done.

It is understood the package on offer does not go beyond United's pay structure, so they feel any comparisons with Alexis Sanchez - who was given a £350,000-a-week contract which he failed to come close to justifying - are wide of the mark.

They also feel Cavani's age is not an issue and his experience will help develop the younger players in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.

It is understood talks over signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho have not progressed, although club sources refuse to say whether United's attempt to land the 20-year-old England international is over.

Atletico Madrid draw blanks against Villarreal

Luis Suarez had a quiet first home start after his star performance from the bench in last week's 6-1 win over Granada and Atletico only really started to create some danger when the Uruguayan came off and was replaced by Diego Costa.

Villarreal played the better football for most of the game and could have taken the lead in either half through right back Mario Gaspar, who was thwarted on both occasions by excellent saves from keeper Jan Oblak.

Unai Emery's Villarreal provisionally lead the standings with eight points from five games, while Atletico, who started the campaign two weeks later, have taken five from three.

Atletico went into the game looking for a response after being cancelled out by Huesca in Wednesday's goalless draw but again struggled to break down their opponents, and Oblak was critical with his side.
"We were too static in the first half and the more space we found the better we played but we need to play like that from the start. We should have got down the wings more and played more crosses," said the goalkeeper.

French Open 2020: Novak Djokovic eases through to fourth round

World number one Novak Djokovic put in another assured performance to beat Daniel Elahi Galan and reach the French Open fourth round.

The 33-year-old Serb, bidding for his 18th Grand Slam title, beat the Colombian qualifier 6-0 6-3 6-2.

Djokovic, who took the first set in 25 minutes, has lost just 15 games in his opening three matches.

He will face 15th seed Karen Khachanov of Russia for a place in the quarter-finals in Paris.
"I felt I played OK. Played some fine shots, played OK at the baseline," said Djokovic.
It is the 11th consecutive year that he has reached the last 16 at Roland Garros.Aiming for a second French Open title, Djokovic barely looked troubled against the world number 153.
Galan got the biggest cheer of the day when he finally got on the board after losing the first eight games.

There were moments for Galan - he had two opportunities to break Djokovic at 4-2 in the third set - but the 2016 champion was able to shut him down.

Djokovic finished with 38 winners and saved all five break points he faced, with his drop shot working to particularly good effect.

Bekele to miss London Marathon because of injury

Kenenisa Bekele's much-anticipated London Marathon duel with Eliud Kipchoge is off after the Ethiopian pulled out with a calf injury.

Bekele, 38, was just two seconds short of Kipchoge's world record when he won the Berlin Marathon last year.
"I am very disappointed," said Bekele.
"I picked up a niggle in my left calf after two fast training sessions too close together. I truly believed I would be ready but today it is worse and I now know I cannot race on
"This race was so important to me. My time in Berlin last year gave me great confidence and motivation.
"I am sorry to disappoint my fans, the organisers and my fellow competitors."

Kenya's Kipchoge is now the clear favourite to win his fifth London Marathon on Sunday.
