BEB Weekend Sports: Update!

Eagles Goalie, Carl Ikeme ln Remission After Year-Long Cancer Battle

Nigeria international Carl Ikeme has confirmed he is in remission after spending 12 months battling acute leukaemia.

Ikeme, who missed out on the World Cup due to his treatment, was diagnosed after reporting for pre-season last year.

But 32-year-old Ikeme has now given the football world a lift with a positive update via social media.
“After a year of intense chemotherapy I would like to share that I am in complete REMISSION,” Ikeme wrote on Twitter.
“I still have hurdles to pass to be cured, but hopefully I can move on with some normality!
Responding, Ikeme’s club Wolverhampton Wanderers said:
“There have been some fantastic moments this year but this by far tops them all.
“We’re all delighted for you, Carl Ikeme. See you soon.”
Ikeme has won 10 caps for Nigeria and started in their opening qualifier for the 2018 World Cup, in Zambia in 2016.

Speaking before the World Cup in Russia began, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said: "My biggest regret is the absence of Carl."

Kroos' Late Strike Rescues Germany

Germany breathed new life into their World Cup defence after Toni Kroos' dramatic injury time winner secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Sweden in Sochi.

Knowing anything but victory would make it difficult for them to qualify from Group F, the defending champions found themselves behind after Ola Toivonen's 32nd-minute strike.

Germany were back on level terms immediately after the restart through Marco Reus (48) but three points were seemingly slipping away from Joachim Low's side, especially after Jerome Boateng was sent off in the 82nd minute after two bookable offences.

However, Kroos produced a moment of magic in the final minute of stoppage time to get Germany's World Cup defence back on track and break Swedish hearts.

Victory leaves Germany knowing a win over South Korea in their final group match will almost certainly see them progress with Sweden facing Mexico, who won earlier in the day.

Wimbledon To Decide On Williams Seeding

Seven-time champion Serena Williams will learn if she will be seeded for Wimbledon after a meeting on Tuesday.

The former world number one made her comeback in March after giving birth last year and is 183 in the rankings.

Williams, 36, was not seeded at the French Open, where an injury curtailed her Grand Slam return before her fourth round match.

The American believes players returning from pregnancy should have protected seedings as well as protected rankings.
"The seeding order follows the WTA ranking list, except where in the opinion of the committee a change is necessary to produce a balanced draw," the All England Club said last month. The seeding meeting is due to take place on 26 June.

'I'll Sacrifice Reward To Make AJ Fight'

Deontay Wilder says he is willing to sacrifice immediate rewards in order to make a potential heavyweight unification fight against Anthony Joshua.

Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn has sent a contract to Wilder's team with terms for a huge unification fight , but plans to stage the bout at Wembley in September appear unlikely with a deal yet to be agreed.

An initial date of September 15 has now been taken by the Saul Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch and Hearn has warned that AJ will not disrupt his training regime for a fight of such magnitude.

But Wilder has questioned Joshua's willingness to face him in his next fight, with talks continuing between both camps.
