Ikeme announces retirement

Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32.

The Nigeria international has been with the Molineux club for his whole career, making more than 200 appearances.

In June, Ikeme said he was in "complete remission" after "a tough year and intense chemotherapy".
"Thank you for the support over the years," heposted on social media on Friday.
"My last day as a footballer but one I am happy and grateful for. Thanks to everyone to do with Wolves and everyone in football I have met."
Ikeme's decision to retire has come after consulting medical experts and he told his team-mates on Tuesday.

"The doctor suggested I should retire after the toll the treatment has taken on my body. I can't really risk trying to come back," he told the Wolves website.

Shaqiri scores stunning overhead kick as Liverpool thrash Man Utd

Xherdan Shaqiri scored an exquisite overhead kick as Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 4-1 in the International Champions Cup in front of 101,254 fans in Ann Arbor.

Jose Mourinho named a starting XI including five players who did not feature in the Premier League for United last season, while Liverpool fielded a strong side featuring Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Jurgen Klopp's team took the lead on 26 minutes when Mane stroked home from the penalty spot after Salah was brought down by Demetri Mitchell.

But their advantage did not last long as United levelled through Andreas Pereira's superb free-kick from 25 yards.

Liverpool substitute Daniel Sturridge continued his impressive pre-season form when he scored with his first touch after 66 minutes before Sheyi Ojo added his side's second spot-kick of the game six minutes later.

Shaqiri, who arrived for £13m from Stoke City earlier this summer, then added gloss to Liverpool's win by firing home Ben Woodburn's cross in acrobatic fashion.

Liverpool round off their pre-season preparations with a trip to Dublin to face Napoli on Saturday, before hosting Torino at Anfield on 7 August.

Whyte beats Parker in gruelling contest

Dillian Whyte beat heavyweight rival Joseph Parker on points at London's O2 Arena to bolster his claim for a world title fight.

The 30-year-old made it eight wins in a row as he overpowered the former WBO heavyweight champion in a gruelling contest on Saturday.
Parker, 26, went down in the second round and once again after a chopping left hand from Whyte in the ninth.

The Kiwi rallied bravely in the last two rounds but a tiring Whyte held on.

Both previously counted a loss to Anthony Joshua as the only blemish on otherwise unbeaten records.

But Whyte, who knocked out the previously undefeated Lucas Browne in his last fight at the same venue in March, weighed in over a stone heavier than his younger opponent and ground him down.

Speaking afterwards, Whyte - nicknamed The Body Snatcher - said he wanted a rematch with WBA, IBF and WBO champion Joshua next.
"I would like to fight Joshua again," he told Sky Sports. "There are still a lot of things to work on, but if he wants it he can have it.

Thomas set to win Tour de France

Britain's Geraint Thomas is set to win the Tour de France after maintaining his overall lead on the penultimate stage of the race, a 31km time trial.

The Team Sky rider, 32, finished third behind Tom Dumoulin but still leads the Dutchman by one minute, 51 seconds.

Tour convention dictates that the race leader is never challenged on the final stage, so Thomas only needs to reach the finish in Paris on Sunday to win.
"It's insane. Tour de France! I can't believe it," said Thomas on ITV4.
"I'm really trying not to cry, it's unbelievable. I tried not to think about it, just take it day by day. I've won the Tour de France man, I don't know what to say."
He will also become the third Briton to win the Tour de France, after Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2012 and Froome.
