Man Utd stage stunning comeback over Newcastle

Manchester United fought back from two down to beat Newcastle and avert a defeat that would have cranked up the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho.

The hosts conceded twice in a lacklustre first 10 minutes, with Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto breezing in to score.

The hosts departed at the break to jeers - some of which were aimed at the club's owner and executives, rather than the manager.
But by the final whistle, it was the name of Mourinho that rang around Old Trafford.

The Portuguese, who brought Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini off the bench in pursuit of victory, saw his side reenergised after the break, when two of his three substitutes found the net.

As Newcastle dropped deeper, Mata swept home a free-kick with 20 minutes left to trigger an onslaught on the visiting goal.

Martial curled home six minutes later from Paul Pogba's pass and, after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka pawed away Chris Smalling's effort, Sanchez delivered the winner in the last minute of normal time, heading in Ashley Young's cross.

Newcastle are without a win in their eight league games this season and, once Mata's goal went in, lost belief and shape. Against tougher opponents, Manchester United may well have found such an escape impossible.

Alaves extend Real Madrid's poor run

Real Madrid extended their winless run to four games as Manu Garcia's late goal secured a shock win for Alaves.

Garcia headed the winner in the fifth minute of added time to clinch Alaves' first La Liga victory over Real since 1931.

The win moves Alaves joint-top of the table alongside La Liga giants Real and Barcelona.
Julen Lopetegui's side have now lost three times in four matches without scoring.

Lopetegui, who was sacked by Spain on the eve of this summer's World Cup, had called for a response to Tuesday's Champions League defeat at CSKA Moscow and was rewarded with a bright, entertaining start but faded as the game wore on and a fourth match without scoring will be of real concern.

With Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo no longer at the club, two of the pillars so crucial to their recent success have been removed and the former Porto boss has so far failed to show he can find a solution.

Marquez holds off Dovizioso in Thailand

Championship leader Marc Marquez held off title rival Andrea Dovizioso to win a thrilling inaugural Thailand MotoGP.

Polesitter Marquez passed Dovizioso on the final corner to secure his seventh win of the season.

The Spaniard extended his championship lead over Dovizioso to 77 points with four races remaining, and he can clinch a fifth MotoGP title in six years at Motegi in Japan on 21 October.

Maverick Vinales finished third, with Valentino Rossi fourth.
"It was difficult. It is amazing to win after a difficult weekend," said Marquez.
After a tight start to the race in which the top eight riders were covered by less than two seconds at the halfway mark, Dovizioso, Marquez and Rossi began to pull clear inside the final 10 laps.

Vinales was able to close the gap and passed Yamaha team-mate Rossi to finish third with seven laps remaining.

Marquez and Dovizioso traded places constantly inside the final three laps, with the Spaniard making the crucial move over his Italian rival on the final bend.
"It is not nice to lose on the last corner, but I am really happy. We did incredible work and we continue to improve, "said Dovizioso.

Nurmagomedov beats McGregor

Ugly scenes marred UFC 229 as lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov began a brawl by the octagon after beating Conor McGregor.

Seconds after landing a fourth-round submission, the Russian vaulted the cage and headed towards Irishman McGregor's team, prompting a melee.

Meanwhile, McGregor was involved in a bust-up in the octagon with members of his opponent's team.

Three of Nurmagomedov's party were arrested but later released.

UFC president Dana White said McGregor had refused to press charges.

Earlier White could be heard telling the 30-year-old winner he could not receive his belt in the octagon as he feared it may incite trouble among those present at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena.

He later said the Nevada State Commission, which sanctioned the bout, has withheld Nurmagomedov's fight payment pending an investigation.
"I know if we put the belt on him [Nurmagomedov] in the octagon there'll be things thrown," said White. "I just said let's just try and get him out of here.
"Police officers were getting punched, security guys were getting punched. I actually think police and security did an incredible job.
Khabib jumped over the cage like one of those Parkour guys. What are you expected to do?"
What was billed as the biggest bout in UFC history, one set to break the organisation's pay-per-view record and where McGregor returned after a 693-day absence, will now prompt difficult questions for White and the company.

The aftermath to the bout managed to overshadow one of the most acrimonious build-ups to a contest the UFC has seen.
