Van Persie to retire at end of season

Former Arsenal, Manchester United and Netherlands forward Robin van Persie says he will retire from football at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old who returned to Feyenoord, where he made his debut aged 17, in January - has scored 50 goals in 102 appearances for his country.

During his time in England, Van Persie won the FA Cup with Arsenal and a Premier League title at United.
"When I have to stop? That is probably at the end of this season," he said.
"I will be 36 years old and will have been a professional for 18 years. From the age of five, I've only been involved in football."
Van Persie, who had a spell in Turkey with Fenerbahce between leaving Manchester United and rejoining Feyenoord, told Dutch publication AD he had "lost the fun" before returning to his homeland.
"I also do not believe that my return to Feyenoord has only been successful if we win the title," he added.

Henry waits for first win as Monaco draw

Thierry Henry is still waiting for his first win as a manager after his Monaco side rescued a late draw against Dijon.

There were plenty of empty seats at the Stade Louis II for the Arsenal legend's home debut as manager, and his team led through Benjamin Henrichs' volley.

Dijon levelled when Mickael Alphonse placed the ball through the legs of keeper Diego Benaglio.

Mehdi Abeid's deflected strike looked set to win the game for Dijon before Kamil Glik's late header.

Monaco, champions in 2017 but now in the relegation zone, lost 2-1 to Strasbourg in Henry's first game and drew 1-1 with Club Brugge in the Europa League.

Henry, whose previous coaching experience was as Belgium's assistant manager, started his playing career at Monaco.

Biles Overcomes illness to shine for USA

Simone Biles overcame kidney stone pain to help the USA women all-but guarantee a team final place at the Gymnastics World Championships in Doha.

The 10-time world champion gave a sparkling performance, scoring 60.965 over the four apparatus, less than 24 hours after having hospital treatment.
"It's been crazy. I got back from the emergency about 1am and they found I had a kidney stone," Biles told BBC Sport.
"But the pain is pretty OK right now."
She added:
"I'm excited how today went and we'll keep good spirits for the team final and all-around."
The 21-year-old was making her return to international competition for the first time since she won four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and also since she opened up about being sexually abused.
"Before I walked out tonight I thought I can't believe it's Worlds already," Biles said.
"I feel like I wouldn't have even imagined a year ago starting to train, and coming back, so it's kind of crazy that I'm standing here."
Based on her showing in Doha, Biles also looks odds on to win a record fifth women's all-around title.

Of her four apparatus scores, her vault was the highest, with 15.966 for her first and 15.366 for her second - which was also a unique new skill performed for the first time in major competition.

Champion Federer to face Copil in Basel final

Defending champion Roger Federer reached his 14th Swiss Indoors final in Basel with a commanding 6-1 6-4 victory over Russian Daniil Medvedev.

The 37-year-old world number three, an eight-time champion here, survived a late break to win in 64 minutes.

In Sunday's final he will play world number 93 Marius Copil of Romania, who beat second seed Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-4.

In Vienna, Kevin Anderson will play Kei Nishikori in the Erste Bank Open final.

Local hero Federer, who first reached the Basel final in 2000 and took the title for the first time in 2006, has won three tournaments this year, including the Australian Open that marked his 20th Grand Slam singles title.

It was his second win of the year against 20-year-old Medvedev, ranked 20th in the world.
Victory in the final would put Federer on 99 career titles.

Romanian 28-year-old Copil served 26 aces in his victory over world number five Zverev as he reached the second ATP final of his career.
