Liverpool continue flawless start

Jurgen Klopp said Liverpool "deserved" victory at Sheffield United despite needing a "lucky" Georginio Wijnaldum goal to continue their perfect start to the Premier League season at a raucous Bramall Lane.

The winner was a moment to forget for the otherwise faultless Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who spilled the Dutchman's tame effort before it squirmed agonisingly over the line.
"It's normal you have to work hard for the points," said Klopp. "You have to stay concentrated and do the right things. We did today. It was never a clicking day, it was an average day.
"We were deserved winners. If it's 0-0 we cannot moan and would not. But if there's one winner it should be us. We worked had for it. Winning in days like this is extremely worthy. We scored a lucky goal, we know that. But the boys worked so hard for it."
Klopp's side were far from their best in South Yorkshire - and left thankful that the hosts could not find a way through in a game where they matched the European champions in many respects.

Substitute Leon Clarke, making his Premier League debut at the age of 34, should have levelled it late on, but blazed over.

Liverpool have won their first seven league games of the season, and have a five-point lead at the top of the early season table.

Real stay top of Liga after draw with Atletico in Madrid derby

Real Madrid stayed top of La Liga after maintaining their unbeaten domestic start with a goalless draw at city rivals Atletico Madrid.

In a first half of few clear-cut chances, Diego Costa was inches away from sliding home Thomas Partey's low cross.

Gareth Bale should have given Real the lead in the second but blazed Nacho's cross over the bar.
Jan Oblak produced a marvellous save to deny Karim Benzema late on.

Diego Simeone's side thrashed Real 7-3 in New Jersey in pre-season, but the match at the Wanda Metropolitano was a much more cautious affair with only two shots on target in the first 45 minutes.

Both those efforts came from Toni Kroos, who twice forced Oblak into action with low drives from outside the box.

Atletico failed to properly test Thibaut Courtois throughout the 90 minutes, although it was not for the lack of trying.

Costa almost slid in Partey's delivery, before Joao Felix - who marked his first competitive Madrid derby appearance with a lively performance - dragged a fierce shot off target from the edge of the area five minutes before the break.

Benzema thought he had snatched all three points for Zinedine Zidane's side with 15 minutes remaining but Oblak, diving at full stretch, kept out the Frenchman's goal-bound header with a strong left hand.

The draw lifts Real one point above Granada - who beat Leganes 1-0 earlier on Saturday - while Atletico climb above Barcelona into third.

Hamilton wins in Russia after Vettel ignores team orders

Lewis Hamilton was handed victory in the Russian Grand Prix after a virtual safety car cost Ferrari's Charles Leclerc the lead.

Hamilton's first win in four grands prix inched him closer to a sixth world title and came after Ferrari's chances of victory fell apart following a controversy over Leclerc's team-mate Sebastian Vettel disobeying team orders.

Ferrari's pre-race plan was for Leclerc to tow Vettel down into the first corner to remove the risk of Hamilton, starting second, taking the lead.

Leclerc played his side of the bargain, but once Vettel was in the lead, he refused a demand to let his team-mate back past him.

After a series of conversations over the radio, Ferrari decided to do the swap later and Leclerc recovered first place when he was pitted four laps earlier and allowed to benefit from fresher tyres.

But Vettel's engine developed a problem in its hybrid system on his first lap out of the pits and when he was told to park the car, that led to the virtual safety car being deployed.

It was bad timing for Ferrari, because it meant Hamilton, who had been promoted into the lead by Ferrari's pit stops, could stop under the VSC and lose far less time than under racing conditions, allowing him to keep the lead.

Leclerc then lost second place as well when George Russell crashed with an apparent braking problem just as the VSC was ending, bringing out the safety car.

Ferrari decided to pit Leclerc again to swap his medium tyres for softs, the same as the Mercedes drivers, and that dropped him to third behind Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Try as he might, Leclerc could not quite get close enough to attack Bottas, and Mercedes were able to deliver their first one-two since the British Grand Prix back in mid-July.

Hamilton scored an extra point for fastest lap and his championship lead is now at 73 points.

Mathematically, he cannot win the title at the next race in Japan - but he could well do it the race after that in Mexico.

Wilder to fight Ortiz again in November

WBC champion Deontay Wilder will defend his world heavyweight title against Luis Ortiz in Las Vegas on 23 November, promoters announced on Saturday.

The rematch follows Wilder's knockout win over the Cuban in New York in 2018.

American Wilder, 33, boasts a career record of 41 wins and one draw, and has held the WBC title since 2015.

After beating Ortiz, he drew with Tyson Fury in December before knocking out compatriot Dominic Breazeale in May.

Wilder, who has won 40 of his fights by knockout, said he wants to finish Ortiz with "a dramatic knockout" to send a message to the rest of the heavyweight division.
"He has to be perfect for 12 rounds. I only have to be perfect for two. I'm blessed with the gift of power," Wilder said.
Speaking to BBC Sport in August, Wilder said he would follow his bout with Ortiz by facing Fury again early on in 2020.
He said: "After I knock him out I will go to Fury, knock him out and then we will go for a unification."
United States-born Andy Ruiz, who fights under the Mexican flag, holds the division's IBF, WBO and WBA titles after a sensational stoppage of Britain's Anthony Joshua in June.
