Lewandowski sets record as Bayern go top

Robert Lewandowski became the first Bundesliga player to score in his club's first nine matches of the season as Bayern Munich went top of the table with a 2-1 win over Union Berlin.

The Poland striker scored his 19th goal of the season early in the second half to double Bayern's advantage, after Benjamin Pavard's first-half opener.

Sebastian Polter pulled a goal back for Union Berlin but Bayern held on.

Bayern's win moves them one point above Freiburg, who moved up to second after beating RB Leipzig 2-1. Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg can return to the top two places if they win their games on Sunday.

China to host first edition of expanded tournament in 2021

China will host the first edition of the expanded Fifa Club World Cup in 2021, with Fifa president Gianni Infantino describing it as "the first real and true [Club] World Cup".

The competition, which currently features seven teams, will be expanded to 24 teams from June 2021.
Top European clubs have previously said they will
boycott the tournament.
"The new [tournament] will be a competition anyone who loves football is looking forward to," Infantino said.
Qatar will stage the final two editions of the seven-team tournament. The 2019 competition begins on 11 December, with Liverpool entering at the semi-final stage a week later.

In March, the European Club Association (ECA) expressed concern about expanding the tournament.

ECA board members, including Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, signed a letter saying they were "firmly against any potential approval of a revised CWC", adding that no ECA clubs would take part.

Speaking at a Fifa council meeting in Shanghai, Infantino said the decision to hold the tournament in China was "historic" and would further develop the club game in Asia.
"It is the first real and true World Cup where the best clubs will compete," the Swiss-Italian said.

Tiger Woods extends lead in Japan

Tiger Woods moved closer to a record-equalling 82nd PGA Tour victory on Sunday after taking a three-shot lead at the weather-delayed Zozo Championship in Japan.

The 15-time major champion finished the day on 18 under par after playing for 10 hours, completing his third round and 11 holes of the fourth.

Play was postponed on Friday because of rain and will conclude on Monday.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy moved into fifth place.

Woods, making his first appearance since knee surgery in August, extended his lead over Hideki Matsuyama having started the day two shots ahead.
He did not get off to the best start on Sunday in the third round, three-putting at the first, but he went on to card six birdies to stay in front.

Following the third round, all players then began their final rounds immediately in a bid to catch up on lost time because of Friday's play being postponed.

Woods played until the 11th hole when play had to be abandoned due to poor light.
"I played all right," said Woods. "I made a few mistakes here and there. Pretty pleased with most of the day and I made birdies when I had opportunities."
Asked about matching Sam Snead's record of 82 PGA Tour wins, Woods added: "I'm trying to win, no doubt about that."

This is the first PGA tournament to be staged in Japan.

England demolish All Blacks to reach World Cup final

England are into their first Rugby World Cup final in 12 years after a brilliant demolition of three-time world champions New Zealand.

England had stormed into a 10-0 lead, Manu Tuilagi's second-minute try and a long-range penalty from George Ford fitting reward for a blistering first half.

The 2003 winners could have been out of sight had tries for Sam Underhill and Ben Youngs not been ruled out by the video referee, but when Ardie Savea pounced on a wayward line-out throw to reduce the deficit to 13-7 the three-time world champions were on the charge.

Yet the superb Ford landed a trio of nerveless penalties and with the young dynamos Underhill and Tom Curry outstanding in the back row England held on in style to pull off one of their greatest victories.

The All Blacks had not lost a World Cup game in 12 years and had won 15 of the past 16 games between the two nations.

But four years after crashing out at the group stage England tore the crown from their head with a performance of unremitting energy and excellence on a night for the ages in Yokohama.

England will now face either Wales or South Africa in the final, who play their semi-final on Sunday.
