Liverpool open up record 22-point lead

Liverpool opened up the biggest lead by any team at the end of a day in English top-flight history with an emphatic victory over Southampton - but manager Jurgen Klopp says his side are "not even close to being perfect".

The Reds extended their advantage in the Premier League to 22 points over second-placed Manchester City, who face Tottenham on Sunday, with a 4-0 win against Southampton at Anfield.

They have also equalled City's record of 20 consecutive Premier League wins at home and only Bill Shankly's Liverpool team in 1972 had a longer winning streak on home soil in English top-flight history.
"We're not even close to being perfect. We just look to use our skills in the best possible way. The boys have done that for a while pretty good and that's why we have these numbers," said Klopp.
"We didn't want a 22-point lead. We wanted 73 points at the end of today."
Four second-half goals gave Liverpool a victory that extends their unbeaten run in the league to 42 games and means they have picked up 100 points from the last 102 available.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the opener against Southampton just after half time - his second goal in as many league matches - when he drilled the ball low into the bottom corner.

Reds' skipper Jordan Henderson made it 2-0 on the hour mark with a calm finish after being set up by Roberto Firmino.

Henderson then played in Mohamed Salah for Liverpool's third and the Egypt forward added a fourth from close range in the last minute.

The scoreline was harsh on the visitors, who matched Liverpool for much of the first hour with Danny Ings going close in the first half and Shane Long also denied by home keeper Alisson.

It was Southampton's first away defeat in five games and they fall to 11th place.

Benzema goal decides Madrid derby

Karim Benzema scored the only goal as Real beat Atletico in the Madrid derby to go six points clear at the top of La Liga.

The French striker converted Ferland Mendy's cross from six yards out to give Real a deserved win.

Fifth-placed Atletico, who have not won in five games, were disappointing, although Angel Correa hit the post.

Real could have won by more with half-time substitute Vinicius Jr forcing two saves from Jan Oblak.

Gareth Bale was left out of the squad despite being fit.

Zinedine Zidane's side are now unbeaten in 21 games and have won eight in a row - including a penalty shootout success over Atletico in the Spanish Super Cup.

Second-placed Barcelona host Levante on Sunday (20:00 GMT).

Jackson named NFL most valuable player

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been named the NFL's most valuable player for the 2019 season at the league's pre-Super Bowl awards in Miami.

Jackson, 23, was in sensational form throughout the regular season, setting an NFL record for rushing yards for a quarterback as the Ravens won their division.

The Ravens entered the play-offs with the best record in the NFL (14-2) but they were shocked by Tennessee in the divisional round last month.

The awards are decided by a panel of 50 sportswriters who make their choices before the play-offs begin. All 50 voted for Jackson, the first Baltimore Raven to be named MVP, and just the second unanimous choice after New England Patriots legend Tom Brady in 2010.

It is the seventh year in a row that a quarterback has taken home the honour.
"You have to believe in yourself," Jackson said.
"Some people might say that's cocky but you have to know what you are capable of and the sky's the limit. The Super Bowl is the trophy I really want for Baltimore, not just myself. We're here, we've got this MVP. We didn't get what we wanted, but we got one of them."
Jackson threw 36 touchdowns in the regular season - more than any other quarterback - and scored seven rushing touchdowns.

His rushing total of 1,206 yards was the sixth best in the league overall, and more than double that of the next quarterback on the list, Arizona's Kyler Murray.

Murray, 22, was named offensive rookie of the year while Ravens coach John Harbaugh took the coach of the year honours.

Kenin wins Australian Open title

American Sofia Kenin fulfilled her potential by winning a first Grand Slam title with victory over Spain's Garbine Muguruza at the Australian Open.
Kenin won 4-6 6-2 6-2 against two-time major winner Muguruza in Melbourne.

The 21-year-old was a child prodigy, who started making television appearances from the age of five and hitting with the stars soon after.
"My dream has officially come true," said Kenin, the eighth first-time women's champion in the past 12 Slams.
"Dreams come true. If you have a dream then go for it - it will come true.
"These two weeks have been the best two weeks of my life."
Kenin, who turned 21 in November, is the youngest Australian Open champion since Russian Maria Sharapova in 2008.

The American 14th seed was gifted victory when Muguruza produced a double fault on the second match point - the Spaniard's third of the game and eighth of the match.

Kenin dropped her racquet to the court and covered her face in shock, before going over to the opposite corner where her dad - and coach - Alex was sitting.

Meanwhile the men’s final will see Serbia's Novak Djokovic meets Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem at 08:30 GMT on Sunday.
