Beckham’s Inter Miami score first-ever goal but suffer second-straight defeat

David Beckham's Inter Miami scored their first-ever goal in Major League Soccer but were denied a maiden victory as DC United fought back to win 2-1.

Rodolfo Pizarro got Inter Miami off to a dream start in what was just their second league game with the landmark goal after two minutes.

They then had a goal ruled out by VAR and Roman Torres sent off for handball.

Yamil Asad and Frederic Brillant then scored twice in two minutes as DC United turned the game around to win.

Inter Miami have now lost both their MLS games, having been beaten in their inaugural fixture by Los Angeles FC last Sunday.

Former England captain Beckham had a big role in setting up the new MLS team and is one of the owners, as well as president of soccer operations.

Alisson to miss Atletico showdown with hip injury

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has been ruled out of their Champions League last-16 second leg against Atletico Madrid with a hip injury.

Alisson will also miss Saturday's home Premier League game against Bournemouth and is a doubt for the Merseyside derby at Everton on 16 March.
Liverpool host Atletico on Wednesday, trailing 1-0 from the first leg.
"He is not available for tomorrow and then the next week," manager Jurgen Klopp said of the 27-year-old.
"We have to judge the situation. I would say after the international break, 100%. Whatever we can get before that we will see."
Alisson has also been left out of the Brazil squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru on March 28 and 1 April.

The Brazil international, who has played 28 times for Liverpool this season, picked up the injury in training before Tuesday's 2-0 FA Cup fifth-round defeat at Chelsea.

Alisson also missed nine weeks of the campaign with a calf injury sustained in their opening league match against Norwich City in August.

Adesanya booed after beating Romero to retain title

Israel Adesanya defended his middleweight title with a unanimous decision win over Olympic wrestling medallist Yoel Romero at UFC 248 in Las Vegas.

In a cagey, tactical contest that lacked the excitement many fans anticipated, Nigeria-born New Zealander Adesanya, 30, peppered the 42-year-old Cuban with powerful leg kicks to take victory on the scorecards.

The bout started almost at a complete standstill, with Romero static in the middle of the octagon, holding a high guard.

The Sydney 2000 freestyle wrestling silver medallist's bizarre style clearly puzzled Adesanya, who struggled to find any openings through the first two rounds.

Adesanya found more rhythm in the second half of the fight, however, scoring consistently with powerful kicks to Romero's lead leg.

Romero's attacks were few and far between, and the judges' scorecards read 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 as Adesanya negotiated his first title defence since winning the belt against Australian Robert Whittaker in Melbourne last year.

His performance did little to satisfy the crowd, who booed for long spells of the fight.

With fans jeering his post-fight interview, Adesanya said: "It was a hard fight but, cliche, I did what I had to do. I picked him apart. The legs don't lie.

A frustrated Romero was cheered by the crowd after the fight and, pointing to the fans, claimed "this is my victory" before criticising Adesanya for not engaging with him during the fight.
"He was running and running and running. That's not a champion," Romero said.

Inaugural Basketball Africa League postponed over coronavirus

The start of the first season of the Basketball Africa League has been postponed because of coronavirus fears.

The first BAL campaign was due to start in the Senegalese capital Dakar on 13 March, and no new date has been given.

The new professional league, a partnership between the International Basketball Federation and the NBA, is set to feature 12 African club teams.
"Following the recommendation of the Senegalese government regarding the escalating health concerns related to the coronavirus, the BAL's inaugural season will be postponed," said BAL president Amadou Gallo Fall.
"I am disappointed we are not able to tip off this historic league as scheduled but look forward to the highly anticipated launch of the BAL at a later date."
Organisers say the safety of fans, players, teams and employees is their priority and that the situation will be monitored prior to announcing another start date in the future.

Sporting events around the globe have been hit by the coronavirus but the BAL becomes the first major African event to be postponed because of the outbreak.
