Eagles coach Gernot Rohr signs two-year contract extension

Gernot Rohr have signed a new two-year contract extension with the Super Eagles. The new contract will see the German finish as the longest-serving coach in Super Eagles history by the end of his tenure.

Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick announced on Twitter:
"I'm happy to announce that the NFF and coach Gernot Rohr have concluded all contractual discussions and he will stay on as Coach of the Super Eagles. We have always had confidence in his abilities and we are confident that the national team can only go higher from here."
Rohr, who has been in charge of Nigeria's men's national team since August 2016, has been given a brief of leading Nigeria to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and chasing a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title win 2021.

Rohr's previous deal, which was extended ahead of the 2018 World Cup, was due to run out in June, and both parties had been engaged in a protracted negotiation since last November.

But last week, the NFF board directed the general secretary to conclude all matters regarding the coach's contract within a week, and that his exactly what has happened after reports linking former Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp with the role.

Under the terms of the new deal, Rohr will be expected to spend the majority of the year living in Nigeria, take a pay cut, and be paid in local currency.

Premier League set to restart on 17 June

The Premier League is set to restart on 17 June with Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal, subject to government approval.

A full round of fixtures would then be played on the weekend of 19-21 June.

There are 92 matches still to play, and the first to take place will be those the four teams involved have in hand.

All matches will take place behind closed doors and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport or Amazon Prime.

Safety guidelines are yet to be issued by the government and decisions will remain subject to the continuing fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Clubs have agreed to a provisional end date of Saturday, 25 July while it is understood that finishing the season would require six weekends and three midweek rounds.

2020 Boston Marathon is cancelled

The Boston Marathon has been cancelled for the first time in its 124-year history because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The race had initially been postponed from 20 April to 14 September.

However, Boston mayor Marty Walsh said the race could not be held because of public health fears.
"There's no way to hold the usual race format without bringing large numbers of people into close proximity," Walsh said on Thursday.
The event is the longest-running major annual marathon in the world, having been held every year since 1897.

Kenya's Lawrence Cherono and Worknesh Degefa of Ethiopia won the men and women's races in 2019.

Burns beats Woodley and wants title shot

Brazilian welterweight Gilbert Burns upset former world champion Tyron Woodley with a unanimous points win at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.

Burns, 33, moved to six-straight wins with a 50-45, 50-44, 50-44 decision after five rounds with the American.

In the opening round Burns bloodied his rival and he went on to take Woodley to the floor in rounds two and four, ensuring he was dominant throughout.
"I was calling these guys out for a reason," said Burns. "I'm ready."
Burns earned one of the $50,000 (£40,500) Performance of the Night bonuses for his win and added:
"I think I made a statement for the division, I am next for the title. To beat the former champion the way I did, I just showed up."
Woodley told his Instagram followers:
"I have no excuses, felt good and trained hard. He did a good job of keeping the distance. I have a weird peace for someone who just lost."
In the night's co-main event, Brazil's Augusto Sakai remained undefeated in the heavyweight division by overcoming Bulgaria's Blagoy Ivanov via split decision after three rounds.

Saturday's action was again played out without fans present in order to safeguard against the spread of coronavirus.

UFC president Dana White has drawn scrutiny for the speed at which the company resumed action during the pandemic.
