Toure backs Drogba's bid for Ivorian FA presidency

Yaya Toure is backing former Ivory Coast team-mate Didier Drogba's bid to become president of the Ivorian Football Association (FIF).
"It's time for change in our football. It needs modernity," said Toure.
"When I say I support Drogba, it's also for the good of the country, to have a former player of his kind investing himself in Africa."
Drogba represented his country 105 times and announced his intention to run for the post back in September.

However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, no date has been scheduled for the election.

The former Ivory Coast captain faces competition from incumbent Sory Diabate and FIF vice-president Idriss Diallo.

Despite support from Toure, not all players have backed Drogba's bid. The union of former Ivorian football players have backed Diabate over Drogba.

Speaking on his Instagram page, Toure told his followers, "Didier was my big brother, my captain.

People talked a lot about us but we were always calm, wise. We know each other.
"Too many people tried to criticise him, the press, fans."
Current players from Ivory Coast will be given an opportunity to vote and Toure, the four-time African footballer of the year who led his country to victory in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations said: "I know he is looking for support and I hope he will get it from some of the voters, presidents of clubs or AFI (Ivorian Association of Football Players).

Germany's Bundesliga to resume behind closed doors on 16 May

The Bundesliga will resume behind closed doors on 16 May, becoming the first European league to restart following the coronavirus shutdown.

One of the games on the day of relaunch will be the derby between Schalke and Borussia Dortmund.

Champions Bayern Munich, who are four points clear at the top of the table, travel to Union Berlin on Sunday.

Most teams have nine games to play, with the final weekend of the season rescheduled for 27-28 June.

The German Football Association (DFB) said the season would resume under strict health protocols that ban fans from the stadium and require players to have Covid-19 testing.

About 300 people, including players, staff and officials, will be in or around the stadiums during match days.

The league has been suspended since 13 March. Clubs returned to training in mid-April, with players working in groups.

Christian Seifert, chief executive of the German Football League, said "it was crucial to resume play" despite empty stands and other restrictions.

On Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel eased some restrictions, allowing shops to reopen after fewer than 7,000 deaths with coronavirus.

Seifert said:
"The matches will feel different. After the first matchday, we will all know why we prefer games with fans. But that is the framework we have to operate in and I expect the best possible sport within this framework."
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said he is "confident that Germany will provide a shining example" to the world of football on how to return to action.

Souza out of UFC 249 after testing positive for coronavirus

Jacare Souza has tested positive for Covid-19 and is out of Saturday's controversial UFC 249 event - the first of three in seven days in Florida.

Souza, 40, was due to fight Uriah Hall in Jacksonville on a card topped by Tony Ferguson's bout with fellow American Justin Gaethje.

But the Brazilian middleweight and his two cornermen returned positive tests.

UFC president Dana White has faced criticism for staging a show during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

White, 50, said putting the event on was the "hardest thing he's ever tried to do", while boxing promoter Bob Arum has accused his fellow American of "cowboy behaviour".

The UFC said Souza and his cornermen were asymptomatic and left the host hotel to self-isolate, where they will be monitored remotely by a medical team.
"From their arrival earlier in the week until their departure today, Souza and his cornermen followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible," a UFC statement read.
"There have been no other positive Covid-19 tests reported from the remaining athletes participating in UFC 249. The response to this development is indicative of the effectiveness of the health and safety measures UFC has put in place for this event."

Joshua-Pulev could be staged in roman amphitheatre

Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight title showdown against Kubrat Pulev could take place in a stunning Roman amphitheatre in Croatia, according to the Bulgarian’s manager.

Joshua was scheduled to defend his IBF, WBO and WBA titles against Pulev at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on June 20 but their meeting was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic which has halted sport across the globe.

With Eddie Hearn reluctant for the fight to take place in an empty arena, new overseas venues have been discussed, according to Pulev’s manager Ivaylo Gotsev.

Gotsev said there are ‘active talks’ for the fight to be held in the stunning ancient venue the northern Adriatic city of Pula.
“We have given ourselves (the two camps) four weeks to look for a new territory if the situation and measures in England do not change,” Pulev’s manager Ivaylo Gotsev told local media.
“We are discussing Croatia, there is a unique Roman stadium – Pula Arena, there and we are in active talks,” he said, adding that the fight would most probably take place in August or September.
The Roman Amphitheatre hosted two ice hockey games in 2012 and has also hosted a number of concerts.
