Villarreal appoint former Arsenal manager

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been appointed as manager of La Liga side Villarreal on the three-year deal.

The 48-year-old Spaniard succeeds Javi Calleja, who left the club despite a fifth-placed finish that secured a Europa League spot.

Emery has been out of work since being sacked by Premier League Arsenal in November after 18 months in charge.

He has managed Sevilla and Valencia in the Spanish top flight, as well as Paris St-Germain in France.

Emery took over from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in May 2018 after winning three successive Europa Leagues with Seville and a Ligue 1 title with PSG.

But he was dismissed by the Gunners after their worst run without a victory for 27 years.

Premier League and EFL 2020-21 seasons to start on 12 September

The 2020-21 Premier League and English Football League seasons will start on 12 September.

In the top flight, the campaign will end on 23 May, while the Championship, League One and League Two seasons will culminate on 8 and 9 May.

Next season's play-off finals will take place on the final weekend in May.

The current Premier League season will end on Sunday after it was suspended for three months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The regular Championship season concluded on Wednesday, with the play-offs finishing on 4 August.
Most League One and League Two teams have not played since March.

The Premier League said it would "continue to consult" with the Football Association and EFL "regarding the scheduling of all domestic competitions".

However, the start date for teams still playing in European competitions is still under discussion.
It remains possible they will be given a delayed start, given they could be playing well into August.

ATP and WTA Tour tournaments cancelled in China

Eleven more tournaments across the ATP and WTA Tours have been cancelled after China announced it would hold no sporting events for the rest of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Seven tournaments on the WTA Tour have been cancelled, including November's WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

On the ATP Tour, the Shanghai Masters is the most high profile event to have been called off.

WTA chairman Steve Simon said the WTA was "extremely disappointed".
"We do however respect the decision that has been made and are eager to return to China as soon as possible next season," he said.
ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said:
"We respect the Chinese government's decision to do what's best for the country in response to the unprecedented global situation.
"These important events have been a cornerstone of the Tour's presence in Asia and I want to thank the organizers for their commitment and cooperation.

Chinese fans are some of the most passionate in the world and I know players will be looking forward to the next opportunity to play in front of them."

The ATP Tour is currently set to resume from 20 August with the Cincinnati Open and the US Open scheduled to take place back-to-back in New York.

British Masters won by Paratore at Close House

Italy's Renato Paratore won the British Masters at Close House to claim his second European Tour victory.

The 23-year-old carded a two-under 69 to win on 18 under, three clear of 19-year-old Rasmus Hojgaard (70), with South Africa's Justin Harding third.

English trio Andy Sullivan (67), Robert Rock (69) and Dale Whitnell (71) shared fourth place on 13 under.

Tournament host Lee Westwood finished on eight over after a 79 that featured a quintuple-bogey eight at the ninth.

The 47-year-old, who also hosted the British Masters in 2017 at the course near Newcastle where he is a member, said that despite the excellent work involved in getting the event on amid the coronavirus event crisis, he felt "out of my comfort zone" all week and that he would not be playing at next month's US PGA Championship.

The players, caddies, officials and media have all been in a bio-bubble this week, staying at the on-site hotel, while fans were not allowed in to watch.

Paratore emerged victorious after a sparkling display that saw him play his first 62 holes this week without dropping a shot.
