Bayern humiliate Barcelona by smashing EIGHT goals to reach semi-finals

Bayern Munich advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League with a stunning 8-2 evisceration of Barcelona at the Estadio de Luz in Lisbon.

Thomas Muller put them ahead after just four minutes, before a freakish own goal from David Alaba three minutes later drew Barcelona level.

Thereafter, Bayern were ruthless. After 31 minutes they were 4-1 in front after excellent goals from Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry and another from the irrepressible Muller.

Luis Suarez pulled one back for Barcelona early in the second half, before brilliant work from Alphonso Davies on the left provided a tap-in for Joshua Kimmich to score Bayern’s fifth.

Barcelona collapsed embarrassingly in the final ten minutes, as Robert Lewandowski headed in a sixth and substitute Philippe Coutinho added two more.

The defeat means that Barcelona will end the 2019-20 season without a trophy. Bayern will now play the winner of Manchester City and Lyon in Lisbon on Wednesday.

Arsenal confirm Willian capture from Chelsea

Arsenal have signed Brazil midfielder Willian on a three-year deal after the 32-year-old's contract with Chelsea expired.

The Blues had offered the player a new deal but were unwilling to match what the Gunners had on the table.

"I believe he's a player that can really make a difference for us," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

"We had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions."

Willian made 339 appearances for Chelsea after signing from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for £30m in 2013.
He won five major honours with the Blues, including two Premier League titles and the Europa League, and was voted the club's players' player of the year twice.

"He is a player that gives us a lot of versatility - he can play in three or four different positions," added Arteta.

"He has the experience of everything in the football world but still has the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs.

"I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come."

Willian said that the move was "the start of a new challenge".

In a post on Twitter, he added that he was "excited about the Arsenal project and grateful to the management team at the club for all their efforts and their trust in me".

Arsenal finished eighth in the Premier League last season, while Chelsea were fourth and secured a Champions League spot.

Sergio Perez to race in Spain after negative Covid-19 test

Racing Point's Sergio Perez will race in Spain this weekend after his latest Covid-19 test was negative, the Formula One team said on Thursday.

The Mexican missed the previous two grands prix at Britain's Silverstone circuit after contracting the virus.
"Checo (Perez) tested negative for Covid-19 and the FIA have confirmed he can enter the paddock today and compete this weekend," the team said at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona.

Germany's Nico Hulkenberg has been filling in for Perez, qualifying third and finishing seventh in last weekend's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

Perez tested positive before the British Grand Prix after returning to Mexico to see his mother who had been in hospital following an accident.

Sunday's race, like the five before it this season, is being held without spectators and under strict health conditions with teams operating in separate 'bubbles'.

Racing Point are fifth in the championship despite being docked 15 points by race stewards after Renault protested the team's 2020 car. The row is now set to go to the FIA's International Court of Appeal.

Froome 'optimistic' of Tour de France place for Team Ineos

Britain's Chris Froome says he is "optimistic" of a Tour de France place despite trailing behind Team Ineos team-mate Egan Bernal.

Froome has been some way off 23-year-old Colombian Bernal - the 2019 Tour winner - in recent warm-ups, as he tries rediscover his form.

Ineos have three former Tour champions to choose from for this year's delayed showpiece, starting on 29 August.

"Obviously I'm still finding the race rhythm," said Froome, 35.

Four-time Tour winner Froome, Bernal and British 2018 champion Geraint Thomas, 34, are all competing at the Criterium de Dauphine - the final warm-up event, which will help their team decide who to select for cycling's biggest race.

Ineos' policy is that whoever is the strongest rider going into the final week of any Grand Tour will be backed by the whole team, and they would be unlikely to want to take three riders to the Tour who would be considered team leaders.
