Pogba tests positive for coronavirus

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has tested positive for coronavirus, says France manager Didier Deschamps.

The 27-year-old will have to self-isolate for 14 days.
He will miss France's Nations League game in Sweden on Saturday, 5 September and the home game against Croatia three days later.

However, Pogba could be eligible for selection for United's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on 19 September.

His club said:
"Everybody at United wishes Paul a speedy recovery ahead of the new season."
Pogba will be replaced in the France squad by 17-year-old Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.
"I've completed, at the very last minute, a change in the list," Deschamps said on Thursday.
"Paul Pogba, who was previously on the list, unfortunately for him he carried out a test yesterday which was returned as positive this morning."

Mikel Obi has been handed no. 13 jersey ahead of the new season Championship season.

Mikel, who recently joined the Championship club on a free transfer, scored in Stoke’s friendly win against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday.

The former Chelsea player started the game and was replaced at half-time by Tom Ince, who was also on target at the Clayton Wood.
“If you look at John (Obi Mikel) for example, he’s not played since March because he terminated his contract at Trabzonspor,” Stoke City manager Michael O’Neil told a news conference.
“John has settled in really well, trained really hard and we’ve just got to build up his fitness and his minutes.”
The No.13 jersey was previously worn at the club by another Nigerian, Victor Moses, during the 2014/15 season.

While allocating the squad number, the club wrote on its website “Stoke City’s summer signings have been allocated their squad numbers for the 2020/21 campaign.”

The Potters have also brought in Morgan Fox, James Chester, Steven Fletcher on permanent deals so far in the summer window.

Minister unveils plans to revive Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, says plans are underway to resuscitate the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Dare said this in Ibadan while speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of his visit to the palace of the Olubadan.

The minister said the Federal Government was considering a partnership arrangement with the state government or the outright concession of the stadium.

He said the stadium would bounce back to life as soon as any of the options was implemented.
Dare said, “I met a plan on ground; there is an approval to concession Federal Government-owned stadiums starting with Abuja and the one in Surulere, Lagos.
“I agree that concession is the best option, the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium is the oldest stadium in Africa and the oldest in Nigeria.
“We have another option which is to work with the Oyo State government, we can cede the stadium to them if we have a commitment that they will bring it to standard”.
The Minister also stated that a conclusion was yet to be reached and whatever the decision is will be conveyed to the public.

Kristoff wins first stage of Tour de France

Alexander Kristoff timed his sprint finish to perfection to win the opening stage of the Tour de France in Nice.

After a large group crashed inside the final 3km, Norwegian Kristoff, 33, surged home in a sprint.

Rain made the roads treacherous and led to several crashes, with Pavel Sivakov of Team Ineos twice coming off.

Ineos' defending champion Egan Bernal largely avoided the trouble and finished safely in the peloton.

Colombia's Nairo Quintana crashed, while Astana's decision to up the pace on the final descent from Levens saw Miguel Angel Lopez slide into a road sign and prompted some stern exchanges towards the team from other riders in the peloton.

Ineos' Luke Rowe called Astana's move "pretty stupid".
"I have to say 'chapeau' to the whole peloton - minus Astana to hit it down one climb and, as a result, their leader was left on his back," the British rider said.
France's Julian Alaphilippe was also caught in a crash, while compatriot Thibaut Pinot - one of the race favourites - fell heavily towards the end and rolled over the line with a ripped jersey.

Riders will face a 186km mountainous second stage on Sunday, with two climbs above 1,500m.
