Salah hat-trick sees Liverpool sink Leeds

Leeds United made a dramatic return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence as they produced a magnificent display only to lose to a late penalty in a thriller against champions Liverpool at Anfield.

Liverpool, back in action after winning their first title in 30 years, led three times but were pegged back on each occasion by Marcelo Bielsa's fearless side before this superb match was settled by hat-trick hero Mohamed Salah's spot-kick.

Leeds looked to be leaving Anfield with a fully deserved point only for new £30m striker Rodrigo, on as a substitute, to produce a shocking challenge on Fabinho in the 88th minute, leaving Salah to give Liverpool victory after a serious scare.

Salah made it a nightmare start for last season's Championship winners when he drilled home a penalty in the fourth minute after his shot was handled by another Leeds new boy, Germany defender Robin Koch.

Leeds produced the perfect response as Jack Harrison drilled a low right-foot shot past Alisson only for poor defending to allow Virgil van Dijk to restore Liverpool's advantage as he headed in Andy Robertson's corner.

Van Dijk was badly at fault when he gifted Patrick Bamford Leeds' second before a searing strike from Salah completed the scoring in a chaotic first half.

In a game which also contained four disallowed goals, Leeds were not to be brushed aside and were level again after 66 minutes when a perfect first touch and volley from Mateusz Klich flashed past Alisson.

Man of the match Salah had the final word, however, after that reckless late challenge from Rodrigo.

Solskjaer confirms Maguire will remain captain

Harry Maguire will remain Manchester United captain, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

Maguire, 27, was given a suspended prison sentence on the Greek island of Syros after being found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery.

He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the decision, which nullifies the conviction.
"He is going to be our captain," Solskjaer told MUTV.
"He's handled it really well and, of course, I'll be here to support him.
"We'll just leave Harry and his people and the process to run. For me, he is a top, an absolute top human being and has always been a positive guy with the right values. So I really hope we can see Harry performing at his best."
Maguire will now receive a full retrial in a more senior court and told the BBC his "conscience is clear".

He was withdrawn from the England squad last month, but manager Gareth Southgate says he will "absolutely be looking" to recall the defender in October.

United play a friendly against Aston Villa on Saturday before their Premier League campaign begins against Crystal Palace on 19 September.

Osaka beats Azarenka to win third Grand Slam title

Naomi Osaka demonstrated her growing maturity to fight back against Victoria Azarenka in a compelling US Open final and claim her third Grand Slam title.
Japanese fourth seed Osaka, 22, won 1-6 6-3 6-3 for her second US Open title.

Osaka was overwhelmed in the first set and in danger of trailing 3-0 in the second but then won 10 of the next 12 games to seize the momentum.

The Belarusian, 31, in her first major final since 2013, was broken for 5-3 in the decider before Osaka served out.

Osaka shrieked with joy as she took her second match point, then calmly lay on the court and stared at the New York sky as she contemplated her latest achievement.

Osaka's level raised considerably as Azarenka was unable to maintain the intensity she showed in a one-sided opening set.

The fightback ensured Osaka, who won the 2018 US Open and 2019 Australian Open, maintained her record of winning every Grand Slam final she has played in.

"I don't want to play you in any more finals, I didn't really enjoy that, it was a really tough match for me," Osaka jokingly told Azarenka.

She added: "It was really inspiring for me because I used to watch you play here when I was younger. I learned a lot, so thank you."

Vettel to join renamed Aston Martin team in 2021

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is to join the renamed Aston Martin team in Formula 1 next year.

Vettel, 33, is moving to the team currently known as Racing Point from Ferrari, who earlier this year decided not to offer the German a new contract.

Aston Martin said signing Vettel was "a clear statement of the team's ambition" to establish themselves at the front.
"It's a new adventure for me with a truly legendary car company," said Vettel, who replaces Sergio Perez.
A statement from Aston Martin said Vettel had signed for "2021 and beyond" but did not confirm the length of the contract.

Typically, it would be expected the German has signed a three-year deal.

Vettel said:
"I'm extremely proud to say I will become an Aston Martin driver in 2021.
"I have been impressed with the results the team has achieved this year and I believe the future looks even brighter.
"The energy and commitment of Lawrence [Stroll, the owner] to the sport is inspiring and I believe we can build something very special together.
"I still have so much love for Formula 1 and my only motivation is to race at the front of the grid. To do so with Aston Martin will be a huge privilege."
Team principal Otmar Szafnauer said the team were "hugely excited" by the news.
"Sebastian is a proven champion and brings a winning mentality that matches our own ambitions for the future as Aston Martin F1 Team," he said.
"On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Sebastian is one of the best in the world, and I can't think of a better driver to help take us into this new era. He will play a significant role in taking this team to the next level."
