Madrid’s Ramos scores with a panenka in five-goal thriller

Real Madrid won a five-goal thriller with Real Betis in La Liga as the video assistant referee took centre stage.

Federico Valverde put Madrid ahead from close range but Aissa Mandi - with a header - and William Carvalho scored two quickfire goals as Betis led.

Madrid were level early in the second half through an own goal by Emerson, who was later sent off by the VAR for a professional foul on Luka Modric.
Sergio Ramos scored the winner with a chipped penalty.

There was a long VAR check for both those decisions, with the penalty disputed because Betis' Marc Bartra was penalised for a handball as he put his arms out, falling under pressure from Borja Mayoral.

That was Real Madrid's first win of their title defence, after a 0-0 draw with Real Valladolid last weekend.

De Boer named as new Netherlands head coach

Former Ajax coach Frank de Boer has been named the new head coach of the Netherlands' national team.

The 50-year-old has been appointed on a two-year contract, up to and including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The ex-Ajax and Barcelona defender, who won 112 caps, succeeds Ronald Koeman after he became Barca coach in August.

De Boer had brief spells in charge of Inter Milan and Crystal Palace before managing MLS side Atlanta United from December 2018 to July 2020.

He was assistant manager to Bert van Marwijk as the Netherlands reached the 2010 World Cup final and won the Dutch title four times as Ajax manager from December 2010 to May 2016.

De Boer's first games in charge will be a friendly against Mexico in Amsterdam on 7 October and the Nations League matches with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy on 11 and 14 October.

James leads Lakers into first NBA finals in 10 years

LeBron James helped the Los Angeles Lakers reach the NBA Finals for the first time in 10 years with a 117-107 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

It gave them a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series.
They were led by a triple-double from James, who scored 16 of his 38 points in the third quarter and added 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

The 35-year-old has now reached the NBA Finals for the 10th time - this is the first time with the Lakers.
It is the 32nd time the Lakers have reached the championship series and they will face the winners of the Eastern Conference final between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, with the Heat leading 3-2 going into game six on Monday (00:30 BST).

The Lakers' last NBA Finals success, which was against the Celtics, was led by Kobe Bryant, and James again paid tribute to the star who died in a helicopter crash in January.
"Every time you put on the purple and gold you think about his legacy, you think about him and what he meant to this franchise for 20-plus years," he said.

Pacquiao's special assistant confirms McGregor talks

Manny Pacquiao's special assistant says that the eight-weight world champion hopes to fight Conor McGregor in 2021.

Jayke Joson added that a "huge portion" of Pacquiao's earnings would go to help coronavirus victims in the 41-year-old's native Philippines.

Former two-weight UFC champion McGregor, 32, tweeted on Friday that the the Irishman would be "boxing Pacquiao next in the Middle East".
"We don't deny it," Joson said in a statement on Saturday.
While nothing has been signed yet, he added that negotiation between the two camps "is now starting to move on" and that both fighters are "getting ready for this one epic last boxing fight".

Pacquiao is the only boxer ever to hold world titles in eight different divisions and in his last fight in July 2019 he beat Keith Thurman to become the oldest welterweight champion in history.

McGregor’s only previous professional boxing fight was a loss to Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.

The Las Vegas fight was one of the richest bouts in boxing history and generated more than £450m through 4.3m pay-per-view buys in North America, second only to 4.6m for Mayweather's win over Pacquiao in 2015.
